Garden Design and Associated Courses in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland

Due to the popularity of our courses over the years, and frequent requests from people attending our ‘Design Your Own Garden’ course, we have decided to expand the choice of courses available.

  • Introduction To Garden Design (2 days, 1 day per week)

This course is aimed at the recreational market and explores one method of designing through lectures and practical exercises, with some work to be carried out between each class.

The media doesn’t always convey what is involved in the design process, so we aim to give you an insight into the general principles of garden design.

The course content consists of
  • Preparing a list of wants/needs for the garden
  • Conducting a site assessment and gathering relevant information
  • Analysing the information along with the wants/needs list
  • Design Principles -
                                        Space & Movement
     Enclosure & Openings
     Balance/Proportion
     Formal/Informal
     Styling The Garden
Choosing materials to suit the desired style and mood
The venue for the course:

The Edinburgh Conference Centre,
Heriot-Watt University,
Riccarton,
EH14 4AS

The cost for the 2 day course is £220 and includes teas/coffees and a buffet lunch.
All drawing equipment will be provided.

Class size limited to 14 people

  • Introduction to Planting Design (2 days, 1 day per week)

The course is intended to be a follow up to the Introduction to Garden Design although attendance of the former is not essential. We will not discuss the individual qualities of plants, rather the method of profiling plants to create effective and interesting combinations through texture, form and colour.

Planting design is a very complex subject and we will look at a step-by-step method of selecting an appropriate planting scheme through lectures and practical exercises.

The course content consists of:
  • Assessing the site conditions for planting
  • Considering an appropriate style to enhance the design
  • Profiling plants by assessing individual qualities
  • Decorative qualities of plants -
                                        Shape, form
     Texture
     Colour
  • Functional qualities of plants -
                                        Controlling movement and view
     Creating enclosure and separation
  • Combining Plants to create an interesting and long-lasting scheme
The venue for the course:

The cost for the 2 day course is £220 and includes teas/coffees and a buffet lunch.
All drawing equipment will be provided. You will be asked to bring along some planting books for reference.

Class size limited to 14 people

  • Level Surveying

Changes in level in a garden can influence and dictate the solution to a design. Learning to use levelling equipment and carry out a level survey is also an option which, again, can be a one day class or run in conjunction with the design of a garden.

  • Diploma in Garden Design

Run through the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. See Link for details.

  • Design Your Own Garden

We run an 11 week (2hrs per session) course through Oatridge College and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

If you are interested in any of the above courses please register your interest by filling in the form or by contacting Diane Pyper direct.
